The 10 Most Beautiful Beaches of Zakynthos, according to Niki
We talk to our colleague Niki from the idyllic Greek island of Zakynthos.
Niki shares her tips and insight into the beautiful Ionian island where she grew up.
Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is the third largest of the Ionian islands and has a coastline of approximately 123km. Naturally, we had to talk about beaches.
Zakynthos boasts a long list of beach options, including every shade of blue and green waters, sandy or pebbled, lively or quiet, with watersports or turtle spotting and even a shipwreck. There really is a beach for everyone.
The island is suitable for families and is popular with groups of friends. It’s even an ideal romantic destination for couples. Party-goers, sun-seekers and relaxation-revellers will find everything they’re looking for at this popular destination.
Niki’s top 10 beaches
1. Shipwreck (Navagio) beach
Navagio beach is commonly known as Shipwreck beach. It’s a classic postcard view of a pebble beach situated between towering cliffs. It’s also home to the shipwreck of MV Panagiotis, making it a landscape like no other. This beach is only accessible by boat and luckily there are plenty of tourist boats available during the summer months.
2. Banana Beach
Banana Beach is a long, spacious beach. Therefore it’s ideal for sun-worshippers to spend the day going from sun lounger to the sea and back again. In addition, there’s a nearby bar for refreshments. What more could you want?
3. Porto Azzuro
Porto Azzuro is a famous beach with a stunning natural setting and a lively atmosphere. A green backdrop punctuated with magnificent rock formations and bright blue water, this beach is picture-perfect.
During the day, beach-goers can hire a sunbed, swim and relax. During the evening is when this beach comes alive. The beach bar is known for hosting some of the best parties on the island.
4. Agios Nikolaos beach
Agios Nikolaos beach is located next to Banana Beach. Similarly, there are sun loungers, parasols, golden sand and shallow water along the shore.
If you’re more of a nature lover in favour of quieter surroundings, Gerakas beach is for you. Sea turtles are frequently spotted here, as it’s home to the loggerhead sea turtles which breed on the beach. Some visitors have even been lucky enough to witness eggs hatching. Set in a large cove, it’s ideal for swimming and sunbathing with loungers and umbrellas available.
Tsilivi, also known as Planos, is a well-known resort, combining the beach with the buzz of a tourist town. It’s located close to the capital and is known for its lively nightlife.
Marathonisi is an islet, ideal for those looking to unwind in a quiet setting. It’s just a short boat ride away from Keri beach in Laganas bay to reach the islet’s unspoiled area, with plenty of lush greenery. It’s so quiet, there’s not even a shop on the island, so day-trippers are required to bring their own supplies.
Ksigia is a well-known natural spa area, located about 20km north of Zakynthos. The curious white waters of this beach are famous for their healing properties due to the high level of sulphur present. If you can get past the sulphur smell, this natural spa is as profoundly relaxing as it is astonishing.
9. Kalamaki Beach
Part of Laganas Bay, Kalamaki Beach combines the classic white sand and crystal clear waters with the magic of Loggerhead turtles.
10. Porto Limnionas
Porto Limnionas is a sheltered spot with calm water that’s ideal for swimming and diving.
It’s a rocky beach surrounded by caves and is home to an array of marine life, perfect for curious divers.
