Holiday in Germany In Fall: The Best Destinations For The Colorful Season

Summer is now officially over and autumnal temperatures are returning. The trees become colorful, it gets dark earlier and we look forward to our couch and a warm blanket. Fall is the time of year when we can all recharge our batteries and relax a little more. However, that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the last rays of sunshine and slightly warmer days and taking a vacation in Germany. We show you Germany's most beautiful places and special destinations to get the best out of fall.

City trips

View on Regensburg in Germany The big and most famous cities like Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne are of course great for a city break, but for the colorful fall months, it's also worth visiting a few smaller cities. Here are our 5 suggestions.

Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg

Located in the middle of the Black Forest, you will find Freiburg, a medium-sized city that is characterized by its beautiful houses in the old town. Typical for the region, you will find small streams that ripple pleasantly in the background. Here you can stroll through the streets covered with colorful leaves. Stay at the Holiday Inn Express Freiburg City Center and you'll be within walking distance of all the city's must-see places.

Regensburg, Bavaria

The Danube city shines with its historic buildings in the old town especially well in fall. Walk across the Stone Bridge over the Danube, one of the city's landmarks, and enjoy the view of Regensburg from here. Located at the cathedral, we recommend staying at the ACHAT Hotel Regensburg Herzog am Dom.

Bremen, Bremen

Even though it can rain in Bremen in the fall, this city is definitely worth a visit. The town hall will take your breath away and the trees in the Bürgerpark look like they have been sprayed orange. In the Hanseatic city you will find enough places to walk, whether one of the many parks or along the Weser, here you can stretch your legs well. Don't forget to stop by the Bremen Town Musicians. Enjoy your stay at the Aparthotel Adagio Bremen.

Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia

If you want to discover a colorful place in Münster, then you should definitely visit the castle garden. Apart from the orange foliage, you can discover a beautiful moat, a botanical garden and of course the historic castle itself . At the weekly market you will find all the ingredients for a refreshment after an eventful day. Make the best out of your city break by staying at the Kolping Stadthotel Münster.

Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt

Magdeburg is also an ideal destination for a little time out in the fall. Stroll through the cathedral district and admire the colorful ivy on the walls of Magdeburg Cathedral or rent a bike and ride along the Elbe River for a breathtaking atmosphere. You'll feel like you're walking on air when you spend your evenings in the hotel bed of the Maritim Hotel Magdeburg.

Vacation in the mountains

Watzmann, Berchtesgaden

About two hours from Munich lies Berchtesgaden and with it the Watzmann. This region is one of the most beautiful mountain regions in southern Germany and you will have a breathtaking view of the mountain and its castle from the Königssee.

Brocken, Heringerode

The Brocken is known for witches and magical legends, so it's just the right destination for October. It is the highest mountain in the Harz and is popular with winter sports enthusiasts and hikers. From Wernigerode, you can take the Harz narrow-gauge railroad and ride it directly to the summit. Enjoy the beautiful view from the top and for an extra magical kick you can walk along the Wernigerode Fairy Tale Trail.

Fichtelberg, Oberwiesenthal

The spa town of Oberwiesenthal is very popular with German travelers. As part of the Ore Mountains, Fichtelberg is one of the most famous winter sports areas in Germany, but the area is also paradisiacal in the fall and good for a hike. If you don't want to walk all the way up, you can also take the cable car. It is the oldest in Germany and takes you directly to the top of the mountain.

Nebelhorn, Oberstdorf

With the Nebelhornbahn you can quickly reach the summit of the Nebelhorn from Oberstdorf, but this mountain is also one of the most popular destinations for hikers. From the top, enjoy the view of natural mountain lakes and the vastness of the country. In Oberstdorf you can discover the natural history center Bergschau, the parish church St. Johannes and several other places too.

Sandstone rocks in Saxon Switzerland
