Museums

If you are a museum lover, then the Spreewald and surrounding villages are perfect for you, because you have the choice between eight different museums.

In the open-air museum Lehde, you will learn about the Spreewald people’s way of life in the 19th century and will feel as if you have traveled back in time. It is the oldest open-air museum in Brandenburg.

In addition to the open-air museum, discover the Spreewald Museum, various local and city museums, as well as the pharmacy museum and the ice hut & fishing museum.

Castles

Looking to immerse yourself in the history of the area outside museums? The four castles around the Spreewald are a great way to learn about the history of the area while feeling like you’re in a fairytale.

Castle Garden Lübbenau

Lübbenau Castle Garden is located in the oldest part of the town and was built between the 8th and 9th century. Take a walk in this large English-style park and discover the beautiful nature and surrounding historic buildings of the Orangery. The stunning Renaissance chateau you see today was built in the 19th century to replace the previously demolished one.

Branitz Park & Castle

Bird view on the Branitz Castle in Spreewald Brandenburg

The landscape garden of Branitz Castle has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, but the castle in the center of the park is also phenomenal and definitely worth a visit. It is now a museum and you can learn about the lifestyles of Prince Pückler in the historic rooms. The rooms as you can see them today, are accurate representations of the originals.

If you can't make it to Spreewald and Branitz Castle this summer, we recommend visiting the castle in autumn or winter. Wrapped in the rust colors of autumn or in snow, the atmosphere in and around the castle is magical.

Vetschau Castle

Today's Vetschau/Spreewald town hall makes quite an impression, as it is located in the former Vetschau Castle. The castle complex from the Renaissance is still clearly recognizable, even though lots of maintenance has been conducted since its construction in 1540.

Lübben Castle

Lübben Castle is now officially the town- and regional museum of Lübben. Follow the footsteps of the hymn composer Paul Gerhardt and discover the church on the grounds, which has been named after him since 1930.

The best way to enjoy the view of the historic walls is to take a walk through the castle.

Unique landscapes

Landscape of the forest of Spreewald Brandenburg
Spreewald is a floodplain and moor landscape and is protected by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. The area is characterized by its many canals and the natural river branching the Spree and covers a whole 475 square kilometers. These river branches were formed during the Ice Age and are now home to approximately 5,000 species of flora and fauna. No matter which part of the Spreewald you explore, you surely make breathtaking discoveries.

The three visitor centers of the Spreewald will guide you through the origins and life of the area in a multimedia exhibition. They are located in Lübbenau, Schlepzig, and Burg, and each of the three buildings has a different focus to present a holistic picture of the history and presence of the Spreewald.
