Strolling through the markets of Amsterdam

When we think of Amsterdam, we think of the market. At least we do. The city has so much to offer in this area, especially during the fall. Are you curious about what we think are the best markets? Then read on quickly.

De Pure Markt

Our favorite Sunday market (the pure market). You will find artisan entrepreneurs here in the field of good food and drinks, and a special range of non-food products. Enjoy a delicious burger, fresh oysters or a cold beer here, it’s all possible.

  • The Pure market in Park Frankendeal: Every last Sunday of the month
  • The Pure market in The Amstelpark: Every second Sunday of the month
  • The Pure market Het Amsterdamse bos (Amsterdam Forest): Various Sundays

De Noordermarkt

The market with a tradition dating back to the seventeenth century. At the foot of the Noorderkerk, on one of the most beautiful squares in the city, the Noordermarkt (the northern market) is held on Mondays and Saturdays. Despite the long history of almost 400 years, the merchants have adapted to the demands of the modern consumer.

What started as a patch market with pots and pans is now a market where you can find products for everyone. No other market in Amsterdam has so many different products: antiques, books, prints, jewellery, vintage clothing, paintings, bags, you name it.

De IJ Hallen

The IJ Hallen is the largest and most atmospheric flea market in Europe. It is the perfect place for anyone who enjoys bargain hunting. Here you can enjoy the people who have booked their own stalls to give their clothes and other things a second life. The IJ Hallen can be reached by taking the ferry from Amsterdam Central to NDSM-werf. From there it is a five-minute walk.

Of course, the city has many more markets that you should not miss. So take a look at the 7 nicest markets in Amsterdam for a day out.

Sniffing culture in the museums of Amsterdam

As a vibrant cultural city, Amsterdam has countless museums. All of which are worth a visit. Are you curious about which museum is the best to visit during the fall?

Het Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum cannot of course be missing from this list. We hear you think, the night watchman! Yeah, that’s what first comes to mind for us, too. But the museum has so much more to offer.

Walk through Dutch history in the cultural-historical panorama, or look for art treasures from antiquity. With an audio tour or a private tour with a variety of educational activities, this is the ideal day out for children and adults.

Tip: October is the family month at the Rijksmuseum, so even more fun activities for the whole family.

Fabrique des Lumières

Do you like art, but would you like to experience it in a different form than in a painting? In Fabrique des Lumières you will find digital works by artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Claud Monet and Gustav Klimt. The digital arts center has attracted more than three million visitors in the past few years.

This spectacle can now also be admired in Amsterdam in the former Westergasfabriek. The so-called ‘Culturespaces’ can be admired on the 17-meter-high walls. A true experience for everyone!

Discover the city during an autumn walk

Amsterdam is known for its canal belt, many coffee shops, entertainment venues and masses of tourism, but the city has so much more. You can discover it by going for a walk! There are different parts of the city, each of which is unique in its own way.

Amsterdam West

The Jordaan is surely the gem of Amsterdam-West. You will find several romantic canals, small shops, bars and restaurants here. Have a drink at the most famous pub in the west, Café Nol, or visit the Noordermarkt. Would you rather take a walk through the park? Rembrandt park is the right place for that.

Amsterdam East

This district is actually bigger than we all think. It runs from the Plantagebuurt past the shipping museum to the Amstel. So you can go in many directions. In the autumn period, walk along the Amstel and see how the city slowly disappears under a blanket of fog. Stop along the way at various catering establishments for a snack or drink. Finish your walk in the Oosterpark. Here you can find peace and quiet, but there is also plenty to do for the younger audience.

Amsterdam South

When we think of Amsterdam South, we often think of the many offices on the ‘Zuidas’ and large houses. Nothing could be further from the truth. You probably won’t expect it, but this part of the city offers a lot of greenery.

You can imagine yourself here in different parks: the Beatrixpark, the Amstelpark and the Amsterdamse Bos. Especially the latter is a wonderful sensation in the fall. Enjoy the serene tranquillity of Vogeleiland or walk to the southern part of the forest, the Schinkelbos. Here you could even spot wildlife.

Amsterdam Center

There is of course a lot to experience in the center of Amsterdam. From shopping and catering to real nightlife. But take a stroll through the canals of the center and discover the hidden courtyards and beautiful facades of the buildings. There is a story behind many of these monumental buildings. Find out with a smart walk in the center.
